A FAST Water Birth at Dianthus | Taipei Birth Photography

I haven’t missed a birth yet, but I came close with this one. This mom went into labor and gave birth to her son in the water at Dianthus 2 hours later. I got to the room and managed to grab a few photos of the pushing stage right before this beautiful baby boy was born.

Births are unpredictable. Sometimes they’re fast and sometimes they’re slow; sometimes there’s beautiful sunlight pouring through a window (who am I kidding, this almost never happens haha) and sometimes the only light is a few electric candles and a cracked bathroom door; sometimes they go as planned and sometimes they don’t.

There is always a story to document that is both unique to the people involved and similar to every other birth since the beginning of humankind, no matter what point of the birth story you start documenting. I love to photograph the sacrifice and strength it takes to bring a baby into the world, but also the wonder on someone’s face as they look at this new creature that was just placed in their arms, or the tenderness and love I can see when they’re getting to know one another through a skin-to-skin embrace. For the birth in the below images, there is a whole story about the beginnings of a new family that was a joy to photograph. The few photos of the actual birth were just the beginning.
