Three Chapters of a Taipei Birth Story: Birth, fresh 48, and the Homecoming

The birth of a child is one of my favorite stories to document, but the birth itself is just one chapter. It begins with anticipation and preparation (nesting, doctor's appointments), and then there’s the birth. Yes, the birth is exciting, an earth-shattering event in the story of a family and achingly beautiful.

But what happens after the birth is also beautiful in a quieter but equally formative way. In the days following a birth, you make space for the newest member of the family. Roles shift; time takes on new meaning; you have to learn to breastfeed and change a diaper without getting squirted in the face by pee on top of all this. This is the dust settling after the seismic shift of the birth.

If we’re looking at birth photography as a story with three chapters, we’ve got the birth, the next day or two of recovery (known as a “fresh 48 session"), and then what I like to call “the homecoming.” The homecoming is the beautiful culmination of everything you went through to bring this new person into your family. Finally, you are bringing your baby home. The homecoming is full of firsts: the first car ride for Baby, the first steps through the door together, the first time that Baby looks around with wide eyes and experiences home.

I already knew that I was one of only a few birth photographers in Taipei; birth photography is pretty niche and requires long hours and a lot of commitment on the part of the photographer. But what really surprised me when I did some research is that there don’t seem to be any other photographers doing fresh 48 and homecoming sessions in Taipei. So here I am, putting these services out there!
