Birth Photography at Dianthus in Taipei

I’m a bit behind blogging about my recent sessions—this birth actually took place about 4 months ago and I’ve already photographed another birth since then (also at Dianthus in Neihu, which seems like an amazing place to give birth)! There’s something about the holidays that has me thinking even more about family than I usually do, if that’s even possible for a family photographer. I’m thinking about that warm circle of people that we like to hunker down with when it’s cold outside, and how welcoming people into that circle is perhaps one of the most joyful things I’ve ever gotten to photograph. I don’t remember what it’s like to be born, but I imagine that if we’re lucky, it’s like falling into a brief moment of cold and confusion and then being caught and pulled to safety, with people saying you’re with us. Stay right here where it’s warm. Welcome home.

The birth you see in the photos below was beautiful. Some things that stood out to me: warm light, hushed voices, the determination of the mom, the support of the father, and then the joy when their family circle expanded with one more person. This is a story I’ll never get tired of photographing.
