A Full Day in the Life Session in Taipei

I often tell people that the more time I have to spend with them and their family, the better. However, what may come as a surprise to you is that I HATE telling people this because I’m aware of how much it sounds like I’m just trying to get people to spend more money on their session. I am someone with a very cynical and loud bullshit alarm, and I see that basically everyone is trying to sell something basically all of the time.

The irony is that when it comes to documentary family photography, it’s really true that the more time I have to spend with a family, the better. Of course I can capture some beautiful/funny/true moments in as little as two hours, but they’ll always be a smaller slice of a bigger (and delicious!) pie. This is why I call my 2-hour sessions “A Glimpse.” When I’m with a family for a longer time, this is what happens:

  • I notice patterns of behavior and get a better picture of their daily lives.

  • I’m able to truly document an entire day, which ends up being a very specific sort of time capsule because a typical day when kids are 3 and 5 is very different from a typical day when kids are 10 and 12.

  • People let their guard down and almost seem to forget I’m there.

  • Their child will tell me a funny story while they’re sitting on the toilet pooping, which might end up being a very funny and cute picture.

I recently got to spend an entire day with a family visiting Taiwan and captured everything from waking up to asking for one more story before bed. Below are some of my favorite images from that full Day in the Life session.
